Continuing on from the theme of last week’s Product Of The Week being the Barnel Garden tool range, this week we will focus primarily on the Barnel Professional Pole Pruners, Saws & Accessories. Around this time of year, you will be trying to tidy up your orchards and high hedges. Its time to take control of any stray branches which need taken care of.

If you have never used a pole saw or pruner before it can look like a daunting tool with lots of adjustable parts. The team here at ISE Forest and Garden want to make these tools more accessible to our customers as they are extremely effective and versatile.

When you see a branch or vine out of reach that needs to be cut down you have three choices.

1. Use a ladder

2. Use a pole saw

3. Hire professional help

Hiring professional help can be costly and using a latter to cut at a height can be extremely dangerous so the team here at ISE Forest and Garden are here to tell you that pole saws and pruners are simply the best option.

From the diagram above you will see the various connecting parts which create both Pole Pruners and Saws. It is very simple, the Barnel poles use adapters to connect to the tool heads.

Here on Mower.ie you will find a range of Barnel poles from those with a fixed length to those with telescoping shafts that reach up to 7.75 meters such as the Barnel Z55P3 7.3-23' Ultra Reach Aluminium Pole.

With regards to the Z13-1 to Z25T-1 saw blade range, a Barnel Z-Head is used to connect to the saw blade to the adapter which then connects to the pole.

For example, the Z-Head is used to connect the Barnel Z25T-1 17.25" (440mm) Tiger Tooth Saw Blade - Raker Tooth to the Barnel Z555PR 9.5" Quick Change Aluminium Adapter which then connects to the Z555P series extension poles.

Likewise, the Z-Head can also be used to connect the Barnel Z25T-1 17.25" (440mm) Tiger Tooth Saw Blade - Raker Tooth to the Barnel Z655PR 9.5" Aluminum Round Pole Adapter which can then be connected to the Barnel Z655PFM 6' Fiberglass Plug in Extension Pole Female to Male.

Other saw heads such as the Barnel Z550+S, the Barnel Z555+S and the Barnel Z558+S do not require use of the Z-Head. These saw heads use the Barnel Z655PO 9.5" Aluminum Pole Saw Adapter to connect to the Barnel Z655PFM 6' Fiberglass Plug in Extension Pole. When connecting these saw heads to the poles within the Z555P series no adapter is required.

Other impressive accessories include the Barnel B177Z 20" Precious Fruit Picker Head which offers adjustable bag angle, razor sharp "U" shaped cutting blade and by-pass cutter and the Barnel B277Z Adjustable Fruit and Vegetable Picker Head which uses Razor-sharp twin Bartanium™ blades cut the fruit stem.

Using a Pole Saw

1. Clear the area of anything that looks like it could be a trip hazard. Take note of any obstacles which cannot be moved. This is the most important step as it will allow you to move around the area freely.

2. Using a pole saw requires planning. Plan out exactly where you intend to cut.

3. Position the saw on the area you intend to cut. Bring your saw to a vertical position to initially control the weight of the saw. You can then position the saw on the area you wish to cut and rest the weight of the saw on the branch.

4. You should always position yourself so that your body is standing well offside from the area you intend to cut. While standing offside, the end of the pole should rest at chest level. This way you will always be cutting at an angle. If you are using the Barnel Z555P2 7.5'-19' Telescoping Aluminium Pole or the Barnel Z55P3 7.3-23' Ultra Reach Aluminium Pole these are adjustable so you may adjust the pole to your desired length.

5. As you begin to cut remember the aim of the game is to create a groove in the branch which will then act as a guide for the rest of the cut.

6. The job is not quite finished just yet. Gather up the last of your energy to clean up the surrounding area and collect any fallen branches which may be a trip hazard later.

Using a Pole Pruner

Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 for the use of a Pole Saw are also applicable to the Pole Pruning process. For pruning tasks you will use the Barnel B553 Compound Pole Pruner Head or the Barnel B555 Lopper Head for Barnel Telescopic Poles.

5. In order to get a strong pull without squeezing your palm to hold the rope tight a Top Tip from our Experts is to loop the rope once around your palm and then close your fist over it.

6. Do not try to cut anything too large over a 1/2-inch thick.

7. Be sure to get the twig deep into the crook of the pole pruner head. This way when you pull the rope the twig will be right in the crook where the cutting action takes place.

8. Don’t forget to clean up!
