More importantly, we will tell you how to tackle long grass without causing damage to your lawn. Below, you will find everything you need to know about cutting off long grass using a Cub Cadet Side Discharge Mower and a Cub Cadet Zero Turn Mower.

Warning: Patience required...

As tempted as you are to just cut the long grass straight off this is a very bad idea. The leaves of grass are used to trap sunlight in order for the grass to grow through the photosynthesis process. By cutting the grass straight off you are going to cause serious damage which often shocks the grass, killing it and turning it brown. If you continue to mow your lawn incorrectly like this, your lawn will end up patchy and sparse with weeds and moss appearing.

How to cut long grass:

Remember, long grass is going to produce a lot more mulch and debris which may end up clogging your mower. For this reason, we often recommend using a Cub Cadet side discharge to avoid clogging up the system. The Cub cadet Side discharge models come in many different sizes to suit every garden.

Best practice is to wait for a dry day. Trying to cut damp, long grass can be a nightmare. Putting this type of load on the lawnmower can cause corrosion. Also, wet grass usually tears away instead of a clean cut. Prepare the area well, removing any branches, stones and other types of debris which may damage your mower. This is a simple step that will make the entire process much smoother.

A Top Tip From Our Experts is to sharpening the blades beforehand so the machine can work as smoothly as possible. Remember this is not an easy task for your mower so be patient and remember to stop every now and again to prevent putting the mower under too much stress.

The general rule is to never remove more than a third of the length of grass. Consider how much tall grass you need to mow and make a plan before starting. Cutting an overgrown lawn will take anywhere from 1 to 7 days, depending on its size.

Rake the lawn

Long grass never normally cuts easily because a lot of It is already lying flat. If the lawn appears to be flat, use a rake to make the grass stand. Often long grass is matted when flat so raking will let light and air into the grass and creates a cleaner cut. Then use a mower like the Cub cadet side discharge or the Cub cadet zero turn.

The 1st cut

Give your lawn the first cut, positioning the mower deck in the highest position possible. The mower drive speed should be set to slow or the minimum speed available. Allow the grass to recover for 1-2 days so it grows by about a centimetre or so. Try not to step on the grass while it recovers from the first trim.

Top Tip From Our Experts- If you feel any resistance in the process, then release the accelerator and reverse the riding mower. Then put the mower in drive once again and continue. This should prevent the machine from clogging.

The 2nd cut

Cut the grass again, continuing with the rule of thirds and adjusting the cutting height of your mower to cut away one third of the total length. Again, let the grass grow a centimetre or so. Letting the grass recover will mean it is ready to be mown smoothly and evenly.

The 3rd cut

Now you can adjust your mower deck to your desired cutting height and mow everywhere one more time. Be sure to change direction regularly as the grass can get flattened during the mowing process and begin to grow at an angle. Try to maintain this length.

Now, you will have tackled that long grass without causing any damage to your lawnmower or your lawn.

The best lawn mowers for cutting long grass

The best lawn mowers for cutting long grass are 4-wheeled ride on mowers. When it comes to tackling long grass the team here at ISE Forest and garden always recommend either Cub Cadet side discharge or Cub Cadet Zero turn ride on mowers. These high-quality mowers have a fast blade speed which makes light work of this daunting task.

The side discharge function is excellent in areas where there is long grass as the mower blades cut the grass and quickly discharge it through the side discharge chute. This means the mower deck is clear and capable of getting the job done. These tractor models are very stable on hills and do not cause problems when it comes to traction. Many of the Cub Cadet side discharge models we stock use a wide mower deck, perfect for covering a larger area. These tractor mowers generally offer more versatility as there are a variety of accessories which can be attached.

As a driver sitting in the operating seat you will benefit from excellent visibility. You can easily see what you are going to mow next which is greatly beneficial when you’re mowing a yard with a lot of obstacles.
